FSU — floating storage unit
Storage capacity on the water, without regasification on board.
Class overview
An FSU is a moored vessel used purely for LNG storage. Regasification, if required, happens on a separate unit or ashore. FSUs are often older carriers redeployed as storage, and they support transhipment hubs, bunkering operations and terminals whose onshore tankage is limited.

- Containment system
- GTT NO96 Membrane · Moss / Spherical Self-Supporting Type B
- Tank geometry
- Membrane or spherical tanks, storage only

Key systems
StorageCargo tanks held cold and managed for long station-keeping periods
TransferShip-to-ship transfer arms or hoses for loading and discharge
Boil-offVapour handled as fuel or through a gas combustion unit
Operational environment
Permanently or semi-permanently moored storage, typically paired with separate regasification capacity.
Safety and operational considerations
- Long mooring periods shift the inspection and maintenance regime away from trading patterns.
- Cargo transfer operations to and from the unit follow ship-to-ship procedures.
- Hull and containment condition management reflects limited or no transit time.
Strengths
- Extends usable life of older carrier hulls
- Adds storage volume without onshore tank construction
- Buffers supply between large carriers and smaller distribution vessels
Considerations
- Provides no regasification capability on its own
- Requires a compatible partner unit or shore plant
