FSRU — floating storage and regasification unit

A regasification terminal that can be moored where demand appears.

Compare

Class overview

An FSRU stores LNG like a carrier and vaporises it on board, sending high-pressure natural gas ashore through a jetty or turret riser. Because the unit is a ship, an import terminal can be commissioned in months rather than the years an onshore terminal requires.

Key systems

RegasificationClosed or open-loop vaporisers with high-pressure send-out pumps
MooringJetty, tower yoke, or submerged turret depending on site exposure
TransferShip-to-ship transfer from visiting carriers alongside

Operational environment

Moored at an import location for long periods, receiving cargo by ship-to-ship transfer.

Safety and operational considerations

  • Ship-to-ship transfer requires compatibility checks, mooring analysis and an agreed ESD link.
  • Regasification topsides add high-pressure gas systems to a vessel that also holds cryogenic cargo.
  • Station-keeping limits are set by mooring design and local metocean conditions.

Strengths

  • Rapid deployment for new or emergency import capacity
  • Redeployable if demand shifts to another market
  • Can trade as a conventional carrier when not in terminal service

Considerations

  • Send-out rate is lower than a large onshore terminal
  • Requires a sheltered berth and a gas pipeline interface ashore
