LNG barge / coastal LNG transport vessel
Cylindrical tanks on a shallow hull for rivers and short coastal legs.
Class overview
LNG barges move small parcels along rivers, canals and sheltered coasts, often to industrial users or satellite storage that no seagoing vessel can reach. Many are non-propelled and pushed or towed. Deck-mounted cylindrical Type C tanks keep the hull shallow and simplify construction, at the cost of volumetric efficiency. Arrangements differ greatly between projects.

Key systems
ContainmentCylindrical Type C pressure vessels mounted in saddles on deck
TransferHose connections sized for small shore installations and truck loading skids
OperationsPush-tow or tow configurations common on inland waterways
Operational environment
Sheltered coastal and inland waters, generally moved by tug rather than self-propelled.
Safety and operational considerations
- Towage arrangements and weather limits define the safe operating envelope.
- Inland waterway operation adds bridge, lock and depth constraints to voyage planning.
- Transfer points may be temporary installations with project-specific procedures.
Strengths
- Reaches inland and shallow locations closed to seagoing vessels
- Modular deck tanks simplify construction and future capacity changes
- Type C tanks hold cargo through slow transits and long waits without venting
Considerations
- Very limited parcel size and low transit speed
- Restricted to sheltered water and constrained by lock and bridge dimensions
- Non-propelled units depend on tug availability
