LNG feeder vessel
The shuttle between import hubs and satellite terminals.
Class overview
Feeder vessels collect LNG from a large import terminal, transhipment hub or FSU and redistribute it to smaller terminals that ocean-going carriers cannot serve. Depending on parcel size and trade pattern, feeders are built with Type C pressure tanks or with small membrane tanks, so their behaviour on boil-off and holding time differs considerably between designs.

Key systems
ContainmentBi-lobe Type C tanks on smaller units; membrane tanks on larger feeders
TransferCompatible with both large-terminal arms and small-jetty hose connections
Boil-offVapour used as fuel or reliquefied, depending on the installation
Operational environment
Shuttle service between a large import or storage location and smaller regional terminals.
Safety and operational considerations
- Short voyages mean cargo conditioning and cooldown cycles occur often.
- Terminal compatibility varies between the hub and the served ports.
- Schedule pressure makes structured transfer procedures particularly important.
Strengths
- Connects hub terminals to markets too small for a full cargo
- Parcel sizes match regional storage and demand
- Often able to serve both terminal discharge and bunkering duties
Considerations
- Requires a reliable hub terminal with transhipment capability
- Voyage economics are sensitive to utilisation and waiting time
- Boil-off management differs sharply between Type C and membrane designs
